Summer Wedding Planning

A summer wedding should be a fantastic celebration with hopefully beautiful weather.  While you can’t control the latter (weather!), you can take steps to avoid these common summer wedding mistakes that can turn your special day into an unforgettable summer wedding (for all the wrong reasons).

Wedding Venue

Too many light summer selections

Summer weddings are an opportunity to enjoy light seasonal dishes that you can’t enjoy during other times of the year.  Garden skewers, cucumber gazpacho shooters, salads with summer fruits and tastes, asparagus ties…wedding dishes with the freshest ingredients is a unique summer wedding perk, but it can also leave your guests wanting for more.  Lean on your caterer for their expertise when planning the menu.  Ask your caterer for their recommendations for your summer wedding menu so you don’t serve course after course of light dishes without the main dishes that fuel your guests.

Ignoring the chance of inclement weather

As much as you want beautiful summer weather for your big day, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to avoid a summer thunderstorm or a muggy HOT summer day.  Make a plan B for inclement weather (or plan on booking an indoor venue with air conditioning) and for communicating with vendors so you’re all on the same page.

Skimping on hydration

On a hot summer night, wedding guests enjoying summer (alcoholic) beverages, dancing, and having a good time can quickly turn into a night of emergency room visits and heat-related illnesses.  Make sure your guests have (good) sources of hydration (alcoholic beverages don’t count!).  Talk to your caterer about creative ways to hydrate your guests (both in presentation and flavor).

Not factoring the weather into your schedule

It’s no secret that the middle of the day is typically the hottest time of the day in Wisconsin.  Don’t ignore that fact when drafting a schedule for your big day.  Plan accordingly; schedule outdoor activities (and your ceremony!) during the coolest times of the day.  If you do have to take your guests outside during the hottest part of the day, like for an outdoor ceremony, find a venue with plenty of shade and supply fans.  Your guests’ll thank you later.

Overdressing

When the weather gets hot, your summer guests can dress lightly.  Give your attendants the same opportunity; no one wants to roast (or get soaked) when they’re supposed to be having fun.  Look for wedding attire made with light fabrics and layers so your attendants (and you!) can enjoy the summer weather without overheating.
